Mass emigration is part of the heritage of Atlantic Canada. Bernie and Violet McGinnis and their son, Todd, are part of that great trek. Violet, with a university education, wants more for herself than the jobs available to women in their home town of Tignish, Prince Edward Island. Bernie, a fisherman since the age of thirteen, agrees to leave his traditional calling for work out west. After several months, it becomes apparent that there is some gap between their hopes and the new realities.
