The old adage that tragedy happens in threes was never more true than during the week of October 9-15, 1913.

Black Week (1913): The middle week of October 1913 was a time of disaster, bringing tragedy by sea, land, and air. This one dark week saw hundreds of miners lose their lives beneath the Welsh soil of Senghenydd; two express trains collide near Liverpool; and, the S.S. Volturno and Zeppelin L. II, the world's largest airship, became beacons blazing in the night. The death toll exceeds 550.
