Director Robert Lepage has given us some of the most exciting Canadian theatre of the last decade. In the spring of 1989, he joined forces with a new Montréal theatre company, Theatre 1774, to direct its first production; the adaptation of a book of prose poetry about a modern couple, a medieval convent, and a decaying God figure. The play was called Echo. The film follows the project from its first workshop to opening night and beyond, and gives a privileged view of Lepage at work, and an engaging portrait of a small theatre company struggling to get a show on stage.
