The orders from Mao Zedong were to bring the rampaging Haiho River under control. This absorbing half-hour documentary describes one of the greatest land transformations in modern history. One million Chinese peasants, equipped with nothing more than simple hand tools, reshaped the flood-ravaged North China Plain and turned it into food-producing land. Diagrams, maps and archival footage illustrate this incredible thirty-year feat of human engineering.
