From 1685 to 1758, France recruited a special body of troops to defend her fishing and trading centres in Atlantic Canada. These recruits might have been country boys or petty criminals from Paris, skilled tradesmen or adventurers. They were clothed, fed and shipped out to New France to become part of the Independent Companies of the Marine - Les Compagnies franches de la Marine. This film focuses on recruits (in period costume) in Fortress Louisbourg.
