Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, contains 120 Kampongs, areas that are home to 800 000 mostly unemployed people. With the aid of UNICEF, and the active participation of residents, the city has undertaken a program of education and renovation that will enhance the quality of life without disturbing the equilibrium of these communities.
