Dans une manufacture d'autos, un ouvrier, prisonnier du mouvement incessant de la chaîne, pose des boulons du matin au soir. Il en vient à détester ce travail monotone et, fatigué, révolté contre tout et contre tous, il quitte brusquement l'usine. C'est tout le système du travail à la chaîne que remet en question cet épisode d'une vie d'ouvrier.
