Dramatic stories spanning two centuries of the Canadian immigrant experience. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, 80,000 Home Children (the orphaned and poor youth of Britain) were shipped from England to new countries such as Canada, in search of a better life. Sarah was welcomed into a warm family; her brother Harry was mistreated. His struggle helped Canadian society realize that children must be protected from abuse and neglect (6 min. 17 sec.). As the 20th century began, many Mennonite farmers fled persecution in Russia to settle in Western Canada. Among them were Henry and Helen Dyke, sent by their community to secure a foothold in the new land. In this segment, Henry hides the truth from his wife when he learns that the entire family has been killed and will never join them in their new home (6 min. 40 sec.). The story of the present-day friendship between Carole, a Montreal nursing student, and Isabel, a Salvadoran refugee, highlights Canada's role as a safe haven for the victims of political violence (6 min. 31 sec.).
