A Father of Confederation, first premier of Newfoundland and one of Canada's most colourful political figures, this is a lively portrait of Joseph Roberts Smallwood (or 'Joey' as he is known to most Canadians). Filmed during two-and-a-half active months that included a stormy Liberal leadership convention, the film reveals a man that perhaps not even his close associates and adversaries understand.
