Produced by the NFB in association with the G. Allan Roeher Institute and the Disabled Persons Unit of Health and Welfare Canada.

Nicholas recounts the story of how the parents of a severely disabled child in a fishing village in Nova Scotia won for their son the right to a normal, loving family life. They did this through an innovative respite care program, developed by a social worker with the Canadian Association for Community Living. The film demonstrates that it is possible for individuals and government institutions to work together to devise imaginative community-based respite care programs.
