A National Film Board of Canada production.

Global pandemics are like prairie thunderstorms. Full of terror and havoc, they eventually pass. Bringing a new baby into the world can also feel like a storm.

Pairing sweeping narrative flair with recollections of childhood prairie skies and sparsely elegant imagery, physician/filmmaker Monica Kidd collaborates with animator Duncan Major to create The Storm, a story of disruption and rebirth.

A spacious and meditative soundtrack, punctuated by the ebb-and-flow of ambulance sirens and the first cries of a newborn, is set to the rhythm of human breath. “This is a film about sitting with uncertainty,” says Kidd, “about facing down terror, not turning away, and finding a place of hope.”
