Trading Places (Series 1) - Episode 13 - Cattle for Command
200347 min 15 secFilm: Documentary
The Dale/Baker's are run off their feet most of the time, in part because they are perfectionists. A family physician, Janet never leaves unfinished work on her desk at the end of the day and Allan, a Navy Commanding Officer, runs his departments with naval efficiency. He is also a trained chef and teaches cooking classes in his spare time. The Dale/Baker's have a few fears - animals, rural living, and leaving home without the nanny. In Saskatchewan, Doug and Mavis Hoffman also run their farm efficiently, as farmers must in times of draught and hardship. They have three kids who are heavily involved in everything from hockey to 4H. Even though she has significant chores on the farm, Mavis also teaches full time in nearby Major. Doug hauls grain for neighbours in addition to keeping his cattle and grain farm humming. Mavis is excited for an adventure while Doug is slightly more hesitant... Once the families have traded, there's the excitement of finding out what each of the trades does. A farmer becomes a Commander in the Navy and a doctor becomes a Grade 7-8 teacher. Now, the twist - Janet might think she can tackle a Grade 7-8 classroom, but how about taking it on the road? Mavis is used to student angst, but that's nothing compared to a waiting room full of medical complaints! Her husband, Doug, has to worry about a full Navy unit inspection, but that's nothing compared to his duties at a very important, dignified affair. And Allan, who admits he's afraid of animals, gets to run the farm. As if farming weren't complicated enough, he'll be given a truly stomach-turning assignment! Prairie oysters, anyone?
