This film shows how two Québec companies introduced Quality of Working Life Programs, with differing results. At Hunter Douglas, the project fell through despite a systematic approach and two years of effort involving management, union representatives, workers and foremen in round-table discussions. Workers feared that their union would lose power. At Steinberg, the 24 employees of the frozen-foods warehouse reorganized themselves into a semi-autonomous group working jobs on a rotating basis, with equal pay and equal status. Productivity increased; absenteeism decreased. A succinct, fact-filled documentary demonstrating how employee participation in the workplace can bring about enormous, and profitable, change.
